ISHS Acta Horticulturae 377: VIII International Symposium on Virus Diseases of Ornamental Plants

THE RESPONSE OF GERBERA TO INFECTION WITH TOMATO SPOTTED WILT VIRUS

Author:   M. Kaminska
Abstract:
The susceptibility of 6 gerbera cultivars to 3 tomato spotted wilt virus isolates was studied in the greenhouse from the end of July until March after mechanical inoculation. The presence of the virus in plant tissues was determined by double-antibody sandwich ELISA.

The results indicated significant differences in percentage of infection depending on the virus isolate and cultivar. The incidence of infection was higher for the isolate from tomato than 2 others. Infection by TSWV resulted in a variety of symptoms of which concentric rings, leaf necrosis and leaf epinasty predominated. Other symptoms included decreased flower quality and dieback of plants which were infected in the early age. There was a strong correlation between symptoms expression and the incidence of virus by ELISA.
