A NEW SOILBORNE VIRUS DISEASE IN STATICE (GONOLIUM TARTARICUM) |

| Abstract:
In 1989 a virus was isolated from commercially grown Gonolium tartaricum from fields in Southern Germany in which flower crop damage was severe. The virus was identified as a tombusvirus closely related to TBSV-BS3 on the basis of host range, symptomatology, physical properties and serology. Demonstrated results give rise to the suspicion of a vectorfree soil transmission of this pathogen. The virus adsorbes in various degrees to different soil types, which gives a varying quality of stabilization according to different factors (like temperature, etc.) The outer surface of seeds deriving from infected plants is highly contaminated with virus particles, whereas no virus could be detected in any seed tissue. Herbaceous host plants always show systemic infection after inoculation with the virus, the reaction of Gonolium tartaricum turned out to be influenced by temperature and photoperiod. It could be demonstrated that the virus concentration in the soil was significantly reduced be alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) growth. | |
