ISHS Acta Horticulturae 376: V International Symposium on the Processing Tomato

COMPARATIVE STUDY OF TOMATO SOMACLONES FOR RESISTANCE TO FUSARIUM OXYSPORUM F.SP.RADICIS-LYCOPERSICI AND ALTERNARIA SOLANI (ELLIS & MARTIN) JONES & GROUT

Authors:   V.N. Rodeva, L.I. Stamova, J.M. Stancheva
Abstract:
Early blight in tomato caused by Alternaria solani (A.solani) has been important disease in Bulgaria for many years and a new disease - crown and root not due to Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. radicis-lycopersici(FORL) becomes also important during the last decade.

Comparatively limited number of resistant varieties and sources made us to use tissue culture methods for obtaining somaclonal variants that can provide tomato breeders with new resistant forms.

The object of the present work were two Bulgarian lines-XXIVa and XXIV-13. Tomato somaclonal variants of R1 and R2 generations were inoculated artificially with local isolates of the pathogens.

The results from the experiment proved that it is possible by using in vitro method to receive tomato somaclones with statistically proven different level of resistance to FORL and A. solani compared to starting off lines.

The correlation coefficients between the resistance to both pathogenes as well as between the leaf and stem damages by A. solani were analysed.
