Abstract:
Variety evaluation can help growers and factories to achieve information for improving quality and yield.

A common method is important for data collecting and for laying the foundation for a data bank.

In 1992 a research was carried out to compare nine common varieties with other most interesting cultivars in different four Countries of the Mediterranean area. The same work procedure was adopted in six locations, following an EEC programme for the improvement of the technological quality of processing tomatoes.

The effects of cultivar and site diversity on main parameters are shown in this paper.

A great interaction with the environment was registered, but some characters came out to be stabler than others.

Some common varieties came out to be useful for improving the average level of yield and quality in the different Countries. However, it is important to achieve detailed information regarding agronomical worths and defects and resistance to diseases.

Results are to be considered as preliminary, but it is important to have established a network with the same procedure in the Mediterranean area.
