ISHS Acta Horticulturae 376: V International Symposium on the Processing Tomato

VARIETIES CHOICE OF PROCESSING TOMATO IN THE SOUTHERN ITALY

Authors:   I. Giordano, E. Lahoz, A. D'Amato, A. Pentangelo, A. Sozzi
Abstract:
The results of three-year trial (1990–1991–1992) carried out in the Sele valley, in field condition, in Campania, on 21 new tomato genotypes (varieties or hybrids) for processing with round-oval fruits, suitable for concentrated, are reported.

The aim of this work was to obtain information on the behaviour, biometrical and agronomic characteristics of the different genotypes, on the productivity and qualitative parameters.

Observations about the presence of the main diseases (Cucumber mosaic virus and "corky root" by Pyenochaeta lycopersici (Schneider et Gerlach)) were recorded.

The results show a large difference between the three years, in consequence of different climatic conditions or different intensity of disease infections.

The average did not show significant differences between the genotypes, but we recorded a different behaviour of them in each year, without resistance or tolerance to the main diseases.

Some of the genotypes (AMUR, RIO GRANDE, BRIGADE, ARAGON, AGATA, RED SETTER CENTURION, CORA, NEMA 1401, RIO FUEGO, INDO) showed a good steadiness, in relation to the yield.
