ISHS Acta Horticulturae 376: V International Symposium on the Processing Tomato

PREFACE

Abstract:
The 5th ISHS International Symposium on the Processing Tomato was organised in close co-operation to the 2nd "World-wide Congress on Processing Tomato with the aim:
  1. a) to present recent results of research regarding production, culture and quality of tomato growing for processing;
  2. b) to provide an opportunity for the exchange of information between horticulturists, agronomists, plant pathologists, entomologists, agricultural engineers, biotechnologists, extension specialists and general managers f private and cooperative processing industries.

The participants heard 32 oral and 25 posters, presented by scientists from 18 countries in the following sessions:

  1. 1) Genetics and breeding;
  2. 2) Harvest and post-harvest handling;
  3. 3) Crop management and fruit quality;
  4. 4) Control of diseases, insects, nematodes.

The choice of Italy and the Campania region as the seat of both Congress and Symposium, was due to the great economic importance, of the cultivation and processing tomato in this area that can be considered the cradle of canned peeled tomato.

The success of this Symposium was due to the effort of the entire staff of the "Associazione Nazionale Industriali Conserve Alimentari Vegetali", to the sponsors, to the members of the Scientific Committee, the invited speakers, the valuable chairman of the sessions, to the scientists for the clear and learned discussion of the papers, and above all to indefatigable Co-Convenoring.
