PEACH GENETIC IMPROVEMENT: RESULTS ACHIEVED WITH A BREEDING PROGRAMME FOR RESISTANCE TO TAPHRINA DEFORMANS (BERK. TUL.)

Authors:   E. Bellini, L. Natarelli, V. Nencetti, G. Surico, L. Mugnai
Abstract:
The peach selection DOFI-71.043.018 was self-pollinated and in 1984 produced a progeny "presumed resistant" to Taphrina deformans. From the end of April to mid-June the resistance of these seedling was compared to that of two lines of seedlings that were "presumed susceptible".

Trees did not receive fungicide treatment during the two years prior to the trial (1988–1989). Eleven seedlings for each progeny were examined monitoring 12 shoots per seedling for infections. The results proved that the progeny obtained from the self-pollinated DOFI-71.043.018 had a very low average damage score, indicating high resistance to the fungus. There was a positive correlation between resistance and the presence of numerous leaf glands. The resistant seedlings showed good productivity, and contemporaneous ripening.
