Abstract:
The aim of obtaining yellow canning nectarines was particularly underlined, lacking the peach germplasm of such a kind of fruits.
After having investigated the traits involved to achieve the objective ("pubescence absence on skin", "anthocyanic deficiency", "stone adherence to flesh" and "canning peach taste and firmness"), in 1984 "Flamekist", "Fairlane" and "Tasty Free" (red skin over colour nectarines) as female trees have been crossed with "Maria Serena" and "DOFI-71.041.009" (both yellow canning peaches without red colour in skin and flesh).
Some of the 786 seedlings obtained were self-pollinated in 1987–88 and 315 seedlings formed the F2 progeny.
In F2 the percentage of individuals with "absence of pigmentation" was quite high (25%), but only few of them carried the other desired traits.
Among the canning nectarine seedlings, 7 have been chosen as selections, at the moment under study, for their horticultural value.
