USDA PEACH BREEDING IN GEORGIA: CURRENT STATUS AND BREEDING FOR RESISTANCE TO BOTRYOSPHAERIA

Authors:   W.R. Okie, P.L. Pusey
Abstract:
Since 1937 the USDA breeding program in Georgia has released 42 varieties: 30 peaches, 3 nectarines, 2 peach rootstocks, 6 plum, and 1 plumcot. The most important release worldwide has been Springcrest peach. The newest peach release are Goldprince, GaLa and Flameprince. In addition to variety development, current research includes breeding for resistance to fungal gummosis caused by Botryosphaeria dothidea. Some resistance has been found in Harbrite, Eagle Beak (PI43289), Shau Thai Tao (PI65821), and NRL1.
