STIGMA/ANTHERS SPATIAL RELATIONSHIP IN SELF-FERTILE AND SELF-STERILE ALMONDS

Authors:   L. de Palma, A. Godini
Keywords:   Prunus dulcis, Amygdalus communis, flower sexual organs, flower morphology, biological behaviour
Abstract:
A comparative study concerning the stigma/anthers reciprocal position in 15 self- fertile and 15 self-sterile almond cultivars has been carried out. No statistically different values of stigma/anthers spatial distance were found according to the biological behaviour of the cultivars. Moreover, self-fertile almonds exhibited a more pronounced epistigmatism compared to self-sterile ones.

The results obtained suggest that the reciprocal stigma/anthers position within the same flower should be interpreted just as a morphological trait of almond cultivars, totally independent of their biological behaviour.
