A STUDY ON SEEDLING ROOTSTOCK PROPERTIES OF SOME ALMOND CULTIGENS |

| Abstract:
This paper is designed to determine properties of almond cultigens Afyon sivri, Afyon bitter, Mordogan bitter, Texas, 01–12, 21–10, 47–10, 48–4 and 104–1 as rootstocks. Seeds were sown directly into parcels and one-year old seedlings were evaluated in terms of height, diameter at 10 cm above the ground level, distance up to the first shoot and number of shoots. Root structures were investigated in seedlings that were pulled out. They were classified into 5 groups in this respect. The examined cultigens were tap-rooted in general, however, bitter varieties had greater tendency for producing carrot roots. Low survival ratios of the transplanted almond nursery trees were taken into consideration in the evaluation of the root structures. In this respect, type 47–10 in which tap-root, semi-tap root and fibrous rooting tendencies dominate ranked the first and 48–4 and Afyon sivri were placed in the second group. From the point of view of establishing the orchard by budding in situ, almond types which form tap and carrot roots should receive more attention. The results showed that type Afyon bitter has the least branching which provides an easiness in budding. A positive correlation was found between plant height, stem diameter and number of branches. | |
