ENGINEERING MODELS OF AIR ASSISTANCE ORCHARD SPRAYERS

Authors:   P.J. Walklate, K.-L. Weiner
Keywords:   Air-jet transport models, crop penetration measurements
Abstract:
An analytical model is described for estimating the penetration into horticultural row crops given by a two-dimensional plane jet of a moving air-assistance sprayer. The validation of the model is established by comparing its output with measurements of air-jet penetration into an analogue of a crop with non-responding leaves and variable leaf spacing. A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) package called FLUENT has been used to apply the crop model, used in the analytical solution, to study other design and operational aspects of air-assistance spraying. A simulation of an air-assistance tunnel strayer is used as an example design study.
