Abstract:
In 1990 and 1991 research was carried out in order to evaluate the effectiveness of flame weed control in lettuce crops.
Flaming was applied in post-emergence of the weeds before transplanting the lettuce.
During the first year (1990) some variables such as working speed, gas pressure, timing of application, were considered to determine their efficacy on the weeds.
In the 1991 trial, the operating parameters which were the most effective in the 1990 trial, were compared with chemical and mechanical ones on lettuce.
Best results were obtained at 0.27 – 0.42 m · s-1 speed, 0.20 MPa pressure, 4–8 days from the first irrigation with weeds at first stage of growth.
Flame weed control alone at 0.27 m s-1 gave a lettuce yield that did not differ from the one obtained with the chemical application.
