Abstract:
Pollution of the environment caused by crop production can sometimes be severe.
Public opinion but also growers are increasingly concerned about the pollution of the environment and the quality of production systems.
The governmental target for agriculture is a reduction of the consumption of more than 50% of active ingredients by the year 2000.
LEI/DLO started in 1988 with one year registrations on four crops to get information about consumption of pesticides and spray-management on glassholdings.
These first registrations were followed in 1991/92 and 1992/93 by more detailed surveys on specialized holdings growing roses and three varieties of potplants.
The intention of these projects is to search, together with growers, for the best, enviromental friendly, production methods with the condition of maintaining quality and economic feasibility.
For the different crops, the possibilities are diverse to reduce consumption and dependence on chemical pesticides.
One year registrations can give much information about pest control.
However, incidental annual effects can play a major role.
Therefore multi-year registrations are necessary.
