ISHS Acta Horticulturae 372: Symposium on Engineering as a Tool to reduce Pesticide Consumption and Operator Hazards in Horticulture

HORTICULTURAL EFFECTIVITY OF SPRAYING IN RELATION TO SPRAYING MACHINE SYSTEMS AND PLANT CHARACTERISTICS

Author:   G. Dimitrievits
Keywords:   Chemical loss, plant characteristics, system of spraying machine, Anti Drift, spraying head, droplet size
Abstract:
A significant amount of the pesticides are not utilized when the target is missed causing a possible negative effect on environment. By using Anti Drift spraying heads evaporation and drift can be decreased, as the ratio of droplets below 100 micron of size is half of that with traditional nozzles. Losses in spray getting to the soil depends on the system and design of spraying machine as well as the plant characteristics. In vegetable plantations losses varied between 3–10%.

Using a closed type spraying machine (spraying tunnel) can decrease the spray reaching the soil in grape plantations. By using the appropriate type of machine and settings so that the extent of losses can be considerably reduced and acceptable protection can be achieved.
