ISHS Acta Horticulturae 371: VII International Symposium on Timing Field Production of Vegetables

TIMING OF EARLY CARROTS BY MEANS OF DIRECT COVERS

Author:   K. Grudzien
Abstract:
Nonwoven polypropylene (PP) and perforated polyethylene plastic film (PE) were used as direct plant covers in early carrots grown in field experiments conducted in 1992 and 1993. Covers used in the early growth stages of carrots (PP cover to 5 or 10 cm plant height and PE covers to 2–3 true leaf stage) enhanced growth and brought about twice as high early yield (harvested beginning of July) as compared that of the uncovered control (the 1992 and 1993 average early for the PP covers kept to 5 and 10 cm plant height and PE cover kept to 2–3 true leaf was 3.28, 3.50 and 2.83 kg/m2 respectively as compared to 1.66 kg/m2 of the uncovered control). At delayed harvest made two weeks first one the differences were less evident and both PP covers appeared to be more effective as the PE one.
