USEFULNESS OF A SLIDABLE FOIL TUNNEL IN ACCELERATED VEGETABLE GROWING

Author:   H. Buczkowska
Abstract:
Referring to the tradition of Polish horticulture of the interwar period - the accelerated cultivation of vegetables in migration cold beds, the principles of adaptation and utilization of slidable foil tunnel were worked out at the Department of Vegetable Crops, the University of Agriculture, Lublin. The studies were carried out in the years 1988–1990. During the vegetation season three-fold use of slidable foil tunnel was practised: spring, summer and autumn cultivation. The earliness, height and yielding acceleration of several species of vegetables grown under a slidable tunnel was evaluated, with reference to the simultaneous cultivation in an open field. The slidable foil tunnel proved to be useful in accelerated cultivation of vegetables. It ensured triple use of foil shield in a vegetation season. It created better thermic conditions and influenced positively the earliness and yielding of vegetables in the spring. It was especially useful in summer with sweet pepper and aubergine cultivation, and in the autumn it enabled the cultivation of the vegetables of short vegetative period and low thermic requirments. depending on the weather in a year as well as the species, the acceleration of yield reached from days (lettuce) to 15–32 days (aubergine).
