CELERY CULTIVATION FOR SPRING TO AUTUMN HARVEST

Abstract:
Leaf vegetables are charakterized by high biological value but their consumption in our country is relatively low, of very seasonal character and their choice is very poor. Celery is a valuable leaf vegetable but it is little know both among the producers and the consumers. Hence, an increasing production and consumption of celery in Poland is highly purposeful. It belongs to the vegetables of the moderately cold climate, so Poland presents perfect environmental conditions for celery and its cultivation under covers is very economical on energy.

In the years 1975–1985 the Department of Vegetable Production at the Lublin Agricultural University worked out different technologies of cultivating celery for early spring (glasshouses, plastic tunnels, perforated plastic film), summer (early dates of planting in the field) and autumn harvest for the direct consumption and as a material for food processing and freezing (delayed dates of planting in the field). Heated and unheated rooms provide the harvest from March to April with mean yields between 4.3 and 9.9 kg/m2. Ground cultivations covered with perforated plastic film allow for harvest from May to July, obtaining the mean yield of 2–7 kg/m2. In field cultivations planting out takes place from the middle of May till the end of June - then the harvest falls in summer months and it continues until autumn frosts. Mean yields from 1 hectar in such cultivations are about 50 tons on mineral soil and about 80 tons on peat soil. Our country also provides good conditions for both foreign varieties (indicated in the studies) and the Polish new cultivation creations, Zefir and Helios.
