SPRING SOIL FUMIGATION WITH DAZOMET IN CHICORY GROWING AND ITS SUBSEQUENT EFFECT ON HEAD QUALITY.

Abstract:
Spring broadcast or row application of dazomet at the rates of 200, 300 and 400 kg/ha without soil sealing with plastic film had no significant influence on the yield of chicory roots. Slight phytotoxic after-effect of dazomet was observed during extremely dry spring (1987) only at the highest rate (400 kg/ha). Broadcasting of dazomet at the rates of 300 or 400 kg provided excellent and long-lasting weed control effect in comparison with commonly used propyzamid (1,5 kg/ha). Strip application of dazomet also gave satisfactory results in weed control, permitting to reduce the amount of the fumigant per area unit by 55%. However, the strip application should be followed by mechanical soil cultivation between the rows. Generally, the subsequent influence of soil treatment with dazomet on the yield and quality of chicory heads in hydroponic forcing was not significant. Nevertheless, the productivity of the roots from the broadcast treated soil was 4 – 19% higher than those from propyzamide treatment. Early spring soil fumigation with dazomet is possible to be performed before sowing of chicory witloof even if the weather conditions were unfavorable for action of dazomet in the soil.
