ISHS Acta Horticulturae 371: VII International Symposium on Timing Field Production of Vegetables

EFFECTS OF SOWING DATES AND PLANT DENSITIES ON THE YIELD AND QUALITY OF SOME ONION VARIETIES IN SOUTHEAST ANATOLIA

Authors:   Y. Pakyürek, K. Abak, N. Sari, H.Y. Güler
Abstract:
This study was carried out to determine optimum plantation time (Spring, Autumn), plant densities and varieties at Koruklu Research Station in Sanlhurfa between 1989 to 1991.

5 different varieties were used in Spring and Autumn sowing. Effect of three different seed quantities (2 kg, 3 kg, 4 kg per ha) and three different spacing between the rows (25, 30 and 35 cm) on the yield and quality of onions were investigated.

According to the results of the trials, spring plantation was more suitable in comparison to autumn plantation due to extreme cold weather. Çorum, Akgün 12 and SG 936 were found as the most suitable varieties. Plant density trial has shown that spacing between rows was not effective on the yield and bulb quality. 4 kg per hectar seed quantity given more yield than the others whereas quality was not effected.
