ISHS Acta Horticulturae 371: VII International Symposium on Timing Field Production of Vegetables

YIELD AND QUALITY OF NEW ARTICHOKE CULTIVARS PROPAGATED BY 'SEED'

Authors:   N. Calabrese, A. Elia, G. Sarli
Abstract:
The trial was carried out over the period 1992–1993 at the "E. Pantanelli" experimental farm in Policoro (MT), in southern Italy. Eight cultivars, such as '044', '137', '271', '386-a', '386-lb', '386–2b', '307', '374', were seeded in polystyrene containers in June 1992 and transplanted into the field 37 days later with a density of nearly 12000 plants ha-1. The heads were harvests 19 times between November and May. The cultivars 044, '271', '307', 386-a', 386-1b' and '386–2b', produced the highest number of heads with an average of 209000 per hectare compared with cultivars 137 and '374' which produced 143000 heads ha -1. The mean yield time (MYT) was 147 days for the cv. 374 and 189 days for the cv. 044. Cv. 374 produced 20% of its total yield in 42 days, while cv. 044 did so in 179 days. All the cultivars produced 50% of their total yield in about 179 days except cv. 374 and '044' which took 187 and 191 days respectively. Total yield, number, weight and size of heads were lower in cv.374. The inflorescence complex ("pappus") was about 2 mm in the cultivars 044, '307', '374', and '386–2b', and 4 mm in '271' and '137'.
