ISHS Acta Horticulturae 371: VII International Symposium on Timing Field Production of Vegetables

THE EFFECT OF DIFFERENT FACTORS ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF CHIVE CLUSTERS

Authors:   T. Rodkiewicz, M. Tendaj
Abstract:
The study examined the effect of the date and rate of sowing on growth and development of chive as well as on the yield of clusters in the first and second year of vegetation. Four sowing rates were applied: 5, 10, 15 and 20 kg of seeds per 1 ha, at two dates - the middle of April and the middle of May. In the first year, the examinations showed intensive divisions of the plants resulting in over five-fold increase in their number. The plants from the April sowing yielded over 50% more descendants as compared with the plants from the May sowing. The number of plant divisions increased with decreasing sowing density (seeding rate).

The yield of one and two years old clusters from the plots of the highest seeding rate was correspondingly by 69.3% and 27.2% higher than from the lowest seeding rate plots. The yield of one year old clusters obtained from the April sowing of seeds was by 30.8% higher than that from the May sowing, while in the second year the difference was much smaller. Totally, the yield of two years old clusters was by 112.6% higher than in the case of one year old ones.
