Abstract:
In response to increasing demands by the public for high quality produce, vegetable growers face unrelenting pressure to refine continually their production techniques to produce the appropriate size and quality of vegetable, when the market requires it, with the minimum of ‘outgrades’. This paper describes recent work at Wellesbourne to improve the reliability of establishment from seed, including selection of seed, a new method of sowing using a dibber drill, timing of irrigation post-sowing and the placement of ‘starter’ fertiliser.
The paper also describes models to predict time of maturity of heading brassicas and size of carrot roots at harvest from measurements on plant samples taken at an early stage of growth.
