Abstract:
At present there is no well defined way to decide when to irrigate during crop establishment.
In the series of experiments presented a method of determining the optimum time to irrigate following sowing in eight species of vegetables is demonstrated.
The benefits of this single timed irrigation were clearly shown across ten field sowings of onions.
The method, which uses thermal time to indicate the progress of germination in the soil is discussed in relation to current understanding of how seedling emergence patterns are generated in horticultural seed beds.
