| Abstract:
Cultivars of butterhead, crisp and Romaine lettuce, Chinese cabbage and leaf chicory were grown in the field in the three periods to be harvested in June, July and September. All plants were grown on the same soil with the same spacing, irrigation and fertilization program. Best yield gave Chinese cabbage produced for automn harvest and crips and Romaine lettuce produced during entire growing season. Chinese cabbage and butterhead lettuce grown during long day conditions gave low marketable yield and easily bolted. Leaf chicory - radicchio is rather low yielding and due to bitter taste probably would be very difficult for introduction on Polish market. The nitrate content of all compared salad vegetables grown in the field conditions, when light intensity is high, was relatively low ranging in average from 217 for Romaine and 281 for crisp lettuce to 472 for butter head lettuce, 537 for leaf chicory and 561 mg of nitrates per 1 kg of fresh weight for Chinese cabbage. | |
