Abstract:
The expected arrival of the black Sigatoka leaf disease in Brazil will cause serious problems for the country's huge banana production, because of the known susceptibility of the most popular cultivars and the low level of technology used in the great majority of plantations.
The progress is outlined of the programme of CNPMF-EMBRAPA to secure genetic control of this disease by the substitution of existing cultivars by resistant ones, either produced in Brazil or introduced from outside.
