Abstract:
A study on the behaviour of 122 Surinam cherry seedlings was carried out during 5 years after planting in a red-yellow podzolic soil of Itambé County, Pernambuco, Brazil.
The region presents a mean rainfall of 1000 mm monthly distributed from March to August, with an average temperature of 24° C and relative humidity of 80%. Seedlings have shown a good adaptability to both soil and climatic conditions as much to growth and development as to yield and fruit quality.
Plant height varied between 1.7 to 2.9 m with an average of 2.1 m.
During the first four harvesting outstanding seedlings were Selection IPA 2.2, IPA 3.2 and IPA 7.2 which produced more than 7.5 kg/year.
The months in which fruit production concentrated more were August to November and, October attaining the peak.
Concerning the TSS content a great variability was found among the seedlings whereas acidity was less variable.
Brix/Acidity ratio varied from 2.9 to 6.8.
