Abstract:
Horticultural farm is relatively labor and capital intensive undertakings, thereby its adoption by farmer is dependent upon whether or not revenues derived from it could at least compensate for all the cost spent by farmer.
It is also affected by environmental factor.
The objective of the paper is to examine whether or not the choice of farming system (defined as crop combination) could be justified by revenues generated on vegetable farm.
The research is conducted in horticultural production areas are Kecamatan Pangalengan and Lembang, Bandung, West Java, by doing farm survey on vegetable during February to March 1992. Major crops planted are cabbage, potatoes and tomatoes either as monoculture or mixed cropping practices.
From different crops mixed by farmers, it is estimated that R/C ratio falls between 1.8 to 1.9. Net revenues per hectare in three vegetable crop rotation under monoculture is the highest, amounting to about Rp 8 million per annum; followed by three rotation of mixed vegetable crops, Rp 7 million and by three rotation of vegetable and food crops, Rp 6 million per annum.
This corresponds to the use of labor.
The corresponding labor use is 1296, 907 and 627 man days, respectively.
Therefore, if revenues are objective, then vegetable crops on three rotation is the best decision alternative for farmer.
