EVALUATION OF LETTUCE VARIETIES IN THE HIGLANDS OF MALAYSIA FOR USE IN FAST FOOD OUTLETS

Authors:   N.Mohd. Shukor, Y.L. Loi, S. Azizan
Abstract:
From more than 25 types of vegetable frown in the highlands, lettuce ranks fourth in term of acreage. Three problems are encountered by the farmers in growing the crop and one of them is the non-availability of varieties identified suitable for processing.

A varietal trial was conducted in the highlands of Malaysia to identify varieties suitable for use by the local fast food outlet. Four varieties were tested viz. Gorga, Sunny Lake, Early Giant and Buena Vista. Except for Sunny Lake, which is produced by Australian seed company, other varieties are produced by American seed company. From the study, there was indication that Sunny Lake has the potential for use by the fast food outlet chain such as Mc Donald. Even though, it produced slightly lower yield compared to variety Gorga (28.24 t/ha as compared to 29.44 t/ha), variety Sunny Lake has the highest percentage of yield recovery in processing and has firm and well packed head.
