TOWARDS MAKING MOUNTAIN FARMING SYSTEM SUSTAINABLE : STUDY OF VEGETABLE CULTIVATION IN HIMACHAL PRADESH (INDIA)

Abstract:
Himachal Pradesh is small mountainous State of India situated admit Western Himalayan region. The altitude of the State ranges between 350 M to 7000 M above MSL and its entire population, which is about 0.63 per cent of total Indian population is spread over 16.916 villages and 39 towns. The density of population is only about 77 persons per square km and more than 90 per cent of population in rural. According to village papers, 18.29 per cent area is irrigated. The holding size in very small (1.30 hect) and can not be considered economical if returns from traditional crop rotations, stressing cereals, is considered. Except for certain areas there has been considerable development in horticultural sector, the agriculture in the state can be considered backward from the view point of production practices and yields etc.
