Abstract:
Citrus fruit marketing in West Kalimantan has been a controversial issue in Indonesia.
This paper presents an assessment of this issue based on a field survey interviewing farmers, traders, and related government officials.
The market structure has been characterized, by oligopsonistic competition.
The oligopsonistic shows superiority in terms of ownership of modern facilities, financial resources, well-organized marketing network, as well as management capabilities.
Government efforts to intervene in this market has not been successful due to inability to compete in the above mentioned aspects.
It appears that, any effort to regulate this market should be done without eliminating the existing system drastically.
The less powerful traders should be supported to increase their competitiveness.
