Abstract:
The apparently excessive use of pesticides on vegetables cultivation among the farmers caused a great concern with respect to environmental consequences the more so as this aspect is now a major issue.
In reaction to this issue a survey at farmers level was carried out by the River Konto Project in 1988, in which PT Agriconsult International was involved, located at three villages of the Sub-Districts Batu, Pujon and Ngantang, of Malang District East Java Province.
The survey covered some 199 farmer respondents and it revealed that the main problem is that farmers are still very ignorant about the poisonous chemicals they are using, resulting to:
- the use of pesticides which are not recommended for the crops or target mentioned by the farmers
- using several pesticides in one mixture without realizing the possible consequences of the mixing
- inadequate protection/precaution during spraying as well as home storing or while disposing the pesticides
- spraying pesticides with concentrations which are not adequate
- inadequate information distribution
- unnecessarily high cost per application
