ISHS Acta Horticulturae 368: International Symposium on Postharvest Treatment of Horticultural Crops

EFFECT OF DIFFERENT MATURITY STAGES ON THE KEEPING QUALITY OF NOR (NON-RIPENING), RIN (RIPENING-INHIBITOR) AND NORMAL TYPE TOMATOES

Authors:   I.T. Agar, K. Abak, G. Yarsi
Abstract:
Three different tomato hybrids; Pioneer 5692 F1 (NORMAL), 6353 F1 (RIN) and 4127 F1 (NOR) were harvested in three different maturity stages i), Mature-Green, ii) Pink and iii) Red. Tomatoes were hand harvested, randomized, placed in viols and placed either a) in shelf-life (20 ± 2 °C) or b) in a cold store with 10 °C, 85 – 90 % RH.

Mature-Green and Pink coloured tomatoes of Pioneer 5692 F1 (Normal) and 6353 F1 (Rin) were stored for 40 days in a cold store and analyzed at 10 day intervals. Mature-Green, Pink and Red tomatoes of all the three tomato hybrids were kept in shelf-life (20 ± 2 °C) for 16 and 8 days respectively in shelflife trials. Red tomatoes were analyzed at 2 day intervals whereas maturegreen and Pink tomatoes were analyzed every 4 days.

Tomato samples which were taken from the experimental store were analyzed (a) immediately (b) after two days additional shelf-life at 20 ± 2 °C, for the following quality parameters: weight loss, flesh firmness, fruit elasticity, total soluble solids, titratable acidity and colour.

The highest weight and firmness loss was found in Pioneer 5692 F1 (Normal) tomato hybrid. 6353 F1 (Rin) tomato hybrid was found to be the firmest variety all over the storage period, whereas the lowest total soluble solids were determined in this particular variety. All over the storage and shelf-life period 6353 F1 (Rin) tomato hybrid showed the highest titratable acidity content. The most suitable variety for shelf-life was found to be the 4127 F1 (Nor). Weight and firmness loss of tomatoes kept in shelf-life was found higher than the losses during cold storage. Pioneer 6353 F1 (Rin) was found more suitable for cold storage than 5692 F1 (Normal).

As a result red Normal, Rin and Nor type tomatoes can be kept in shelf-life conditions for 2, 4 and 6 days respectively whereas pink tomatoes of the same tomato hybrids can be kept for 8, 12 and 16 days respectively. Green and pink tomatoes of Normal and Rin type were successfully stored for up to 30 days with sufficient shelf-life.
