ISHS Acta Horticulturae 368: International Symposium on Postharvest Treatment of Horticultural Crops

MAIN RESEARCH RESULTS ON FRUIT STORAGE IN RUSSIA

Authors:   V. Goudkovski, N. Ponomareva, A. Ilinski, L. Kuznetsova
Abstract:
A complex approach was taken to develop an integrated system to retain fruit quality and reduce losses in storage. It is based on investigation of all factors: variety genotype, major orchard factors, physiological status of fruit at harvest and different storage conditions. It was found that all varieties tested on their ability to accumulate CA are divided into three groups. Levels of internal ethylene at harvest for major varieties were determined to make a proper decision for optimum storage conditions. Membrane permeability was shown to be a good indicator to predict picking dates and termination of storage. A new maturity index based on reflectance of intact fruits at 677 and 485 nm turned out to be a promising one. Regression equations were determined to predict levels of fruit breakdown, bitter pit and scald on the basis of major preharvest factors. Different strategies for scald control were investigated: antioxidant treatment, ethylene removal, LO CA and heat treatment. Optimum CA conditions were determined for major varieties grown in Russia to control storage diseases and retain fruit quality. New CA equipment was developed in Russia: hollow fiber membrane air separator, ethylene converter and automatic control system. A CA generator based on electrochemical principals and a carbon dioxide scrubber utilizing high selective aminoactive membranes are under development
