Abstract:
California 'Minneola' tangelos were treated with gibberellic acid (GA3) in a preharvest spray (10 mgl-1) in October and a postharvest treatment (50 mgl-1) in the wax at packing.
Early-, mid- and late-season fruit were harvested in January, March, and April for three test shipments.
Upon arrival at Rotterdam (4 to 5 weeks after harvest), the fruit were inspected for condition and stored at 5 °C for 2 weeks, inspected and stored an additional week at 20 °C, and again inspected.
At each inspection, the fruit were evaluated for appearance, calyx condition, aging, puffiness, firmness, and decay.
Particularly for late-season fruit, GA3-treated fruit had significantly better appearance, fresher calyx, less aging and puffiness, and were firmer than nontreated fruit.
Preharvest GA3 treatment seemed to be more effective than the postharvest GA3 treatment.
The combination of pre- and postharvest GA3 treatment did not have an additive effect.
Decay (< 1%) was negligible for all treatments.
