Abstract:
The effect of pollinators on fruit quality in 32 different combinations of apple trees were studied between 1988 and 1990 in Hungary.
The data of different combinations for artificial cross pollinating were compared with data of free pollinating trials.
In the case of pollinating flowers of cultivars Duncan Red Delicious, Golden Delicious and Idared, with the pollen grain of Gloster, the fruits showed significantly higher firmness and more acid content.
The pollen grain of cultivar Gloster significantly increased the amount of Vitamin C. (ascorbic acid) content of fruits of Duncan Red Delicious and Idared cultivars; but reduced it in Golden Delicious.
When the flowers of the cultivar Gloster were pollinated with the pollen grain of cultivars Golden Delicious and Duncan Red Delicious, the quality of fruits significantly decreased as compared to fruits obtained from openly pollinated flowers.
