GENETIC RESOURCES OF PYRUS AND RELATED GENERA AT THE CORVALLIS REPOSITORY

Abstract:
The Pyrus collection for the USDA-ARS National Plant Germplasm System was assigned to the Corvallis Repository in 1981. The collection includes about 1500 clones and seedlots with representatives of at least 26 taxa from around the world. Asian, North African, and European species and cultivars are included. About 82% of the clones have tested negative for the significant pear viruses. Infected clones are subjected to virus elimination through thermotherapy, meristem culture, and micrografting. The primary clonal collection is preserved as scions grafted on P. communis rootstock Old Home x Farmingdale 333. Back-up collections are preserved in a shade house and about 10 % of the clones are preserved as in vitro cultures, stored at 4°C. Information concerning the origin, donors, breeders, pedigrees, and evaluation data is stored on the local area network at the Corvallis Repository and on the Germplasm Resources Information Network in Beltsville, Maryland. Evaluation data includes flowering and ripening dates, fruit characteristics, fruit photographs, cold hardiness and disease observations. Scionwood, in vitro cultures, pollen, and seed are available by request to international researchers. Many countries require that an import permit and phytosanitary certification accompany pear plant material. In these cases, an import permit with English translation must accompany the foreign request, before the repository can obtain USDA phytosanitary certification and send the plant material.
