Abstract:
In 1988 and 1989, the surfaces of wooden bins were sampled prior to harvest to determine of decay fungi were present. Alternaria spp., Cladosporium spp., Mucor piriformis, and Penicillium spp. were found on 73, 25, 21, and 77%, respectively, of the bins in 1988 and 69, 46, 19, and 83%, respectively, in 1989. Several methods of disinfestation were tested for reduction of Alternaria alternata and Penicillium expansum on pieces of wood and plastic used in bins.
Steam was the most effective treatment on both wood and plastic surfaces.
Benomyl, iprodione, and captan were usually ineffective disinfestants, except for benomyl + captan on P. expansum spores on wood.
Chlorine compounds, SOPP, and quaternary ammonias were effective disinfestants but occasionally were less effective than steam.
Most treatments appeared of similar effectiveness on plastic and wood.
However, sodium hypochlorite was more effective on P. expansum spores on plastic than on wood.
