WHAT THE PEAR INDUSTRY NEEDS FROM RESEARCH FOR THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY

Abstract:
Research needs are: Fire Blight, Pear Psylla, Improved Varieties, Size Controlling Rootstocks with precocity and productivity that propagate easily, highly focused Training Systems, Nutrition, Water Management. Also, Plant Physiology focused on inducing flower bud formation, preventing fruit abscission, enhancing annual flowering and fruiting. Post Harvest research to control scald, decay, internal breakdown surface "scuffing" and premature ripening. Ripening induction after minimal cold storage and prevention of senescence in stored fruit are also important research needs.
