Abstract:
A programme of crosses between European (Pyrus communis) and Japanese (Pyrus pyrifolia) cultivars was begun in New Zealand in 1983. The aim of the programme has been to combine the crisp juicy flesh of Japanese cultivars with the high flavour of European cultivars.
Additional beneficial characteristics gained from P. pyrifolia have been precocious cropping and long shelf life.
Max Red Bartlett and Red Comice have been used as a source of red colour in some crosses.
Several selections have been made and are being extensively trialled as potential commercial cultivars.
