ISHS Acta Horticulturae 367: VI International Symposium on Pear Growing

POMOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF EAST EUROPEAN PYRUS GERMPLASM

Authors:   R. L. Bell, T. Zwet
Abstract:
Fifty-nine accessions of pear (Pyrus spp.) from a collection of over 300 indiginous varieties and wild seedlings from Yugoslavia, Romania, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and Poland have been released from plant quarantine as plant introductions (Pls). Resistance to fire blight has been assessed following artificial blossom and shoot inoculations. In general, the results confirm our earlier observations of epiphytotic infections. Fruit quality varies among the Pls, but is generally poor to moderate in comparison with high quality West European cultivars. There is a preponderance of coarse textured fruit. Season of harvest maturity varies at AFRS from early July for 'Kiselac' and 'Mustabej' to late September for 'Spina Carpi'. Although fruit of most cultivars have persistant calyxes, 'Erabasma' has a deciduous calyx. Fruit size also varies considerably, from small-fruited wild seedlings with fruit diameters of less than 25mm to several cultivars with fruit diameters averaging about 70mm. 'Verbeln' bears red-skinned fruit with red-tinged surrounding vascular bundles within the flesh.
