ISHS Acta Horticulturae 367: VI International Symposium on Pear Growing

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FIRE BLIGHT RESISTANCE AND SOME TRAITS IN PEAR.

Authors:   G.L. Bagnara, L. Rivalta, M. Laghi, R. Quarta
Abstract:
About 3800 pear seedlings from 25 cross combinations were evaluated for fire 2blight resistance, bearing and fruit quality in order to study the possibility of combining resistance and fruit quality. The seedlings, grafted on quince A to keep uniformity in root system, were planted in winter 1988–89 and were evaluated from 1990 through 1992. Among the variables, only the blossoms of the three years (1990–1992) resulted negatively correlated to presence of thorns, in other words, to juvenility of seedlings. Fire blight was not correlated to any of the variables. This aspect gives the possibility of combining resistance and quality, since it is possible to select for both independently. However, considering the matrix of normalized euclidean distances, the relationships fire blight-fruit size and fire blight-thorns resulted in a quite short distance. These information bring to suppose a sort of difficulty in selecting for fire blight resistance and short juvenile period and, consequently, early bearing at the same time.
