ISHS Acta Horticulturae 366: II Symposium on Protected Cultivation of Solanacea in Mild Winter Climates

THE COMPARISON OF GROWTH AND YIELD OF TOMATOES GROWN IN GLASSHOUSE BORDERS, BAGS, RINGS, STRAW BALES AND TOP AND BOTTOM WATERED FINE AND COARSE PERLITES IN THE COLD GLASSHOUSE

Authors:   S. Varis, T. Özüyaman
Abstract:
The experiments was made in the late spring growing period. The results showed that top watered coarse perlite gave the highest and ring culture the lowest early fruit yield. The early yield was also greater in all the perlite combinations than the other growing media.

Total fruit yield was the lowest in the bags filled with soil based compost and straw bales. Although the highest yield was obtained from the top watered coarse perlite, the yield differences between the perlite combinations, glasshouse border and rings were not significant.

It is concluded that the top watered coarse perlite can be used in the greenhouse instead of the border, bag, ring and straw bale cultures because it gives a higher early yield; does not require sterilization like border, bag and ring cultures; it has no fermentation problem like straw bale culture and also it has less labour requirements than all of them.
