THE INFLUENCE OF SOME FOLIAR FERTILIZERS ON GROWTH AND CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF TOMATOES UNDER GREENHOUSE CONDITIONS

Abstract:
Tomato plants (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cvs. Sakata F1 178 and Sakata F1 0524) were grown under greenhouse conditions to determine the effects of some foliar fertilizers on plant growth, yield, chemical composition and the response of cultivars to the treatments in 1991–1992. Nutri-leaf (0.6%), Polarosate (0.07%), Nitrozyme (0.2%), Bayfolan (0.2%), Vitaminate (0.2%), Phosamco "4" (0.3%), Urea (0.4%) and Nutramin (0.1%) were used as foliar fertilizers. The first foliar fertilizers were sprayed when the seedlings were 50 days old. The second and third treatments were given after intervals of a month. Data are presented on leaf composition, physical and chemical characteristics of fruits, and on yields. Leaf N, P, K, Ca, Mg and Fe content were determined. The highest dry matter (13.28%) and vitamin C (17.3 mg/100 ml) contents were obtained in fruits of cv. 178 plants, treated with Polarosate, whereas the lowest dry matter (8.13 %) and vitamin C (12.6 mg/100 ml) contents were obtained in fruit of cv.178 treated with Phosamco "4" and control, respectively. There were no significant differences in pH between cultivars or between foliar fertilizers. The highest total yields occured with Nitrozyme in cv. 0524 (3946 g/plant), and with Urea in cv. 178 (5010 g/plant). The yield was increased about 13.58 % by Nitrozyme with cv. 0524 and 9.91 % by Urea with cv.178 in comparison to the control.
