ISHS Acta Horticulturae 366: II Symposium on Protected Cultivation of Solanacea in Mild Winter Climates

EFFECTS OF PLASTIC WATER TUBES ON GLASSHOUSE CLIMATE AND TOMATO PRODUCTION

Author:   Y. Tüzel
Abstract:
This research aims to use solar energy in non-heated glasshouses and was carried out in order to determine the effects of plastic water tubes on temperature within the glasshouse and soil during the winter season of tomato growing.

Water tubes, which were put among the plant rows, decreased the maximum glasshouse temperature by an average of 2.4°C, whereas, average increases in minimum temperature at the soil surface, 50 cm above the ground and in the soil (10 cm depth) were 1.49°C, 1.36°C and 0.68°C, respectively.

These temperature differences affected the total yield and it was observed that frost damage was less in winter.
