ISHS Acta Horticulturae 366: II Symposium on Protected Cultivation of Solanacea in Mild Winter Climates

IMPROVED PE FILM FOR TOMATO GREENHOUSE

Authors:   M. Cerne, I. Vrhovnik, M. Stopar, D. Heblin
Abstract:
LDPE-IR thermal was developed to improve the quality of LDPE film. In comparison with the normal LDPE film. LDPE-IR thermal film has three times lower transmission of long IR rays and only slightly lower transmission of visible and short IR rays.

In the Mediterranean region of Slovenia, growing of tomato cv. Carmelo was compared in greenhouses covered with LDPE normal, LDPE-IR thermal and EVA film. Minimum and maximum air temperature and the temperature of soil were the highest in greenhouse covered with EVA film, followed by LDPE-IR thermal and the lowest under LDPE normal film. Measurements in May had shown no difference in net photosynthesis in greenhouses covered with different plastic films.

Owing to a more intensive growth, the early yield was 30 % higher in greenhouse covered with LDPE-IR thermal and 20 % higher under EVA film in comparison with LDPE normal film. In greenhouse covered with EVA film the harvest was prolonged for 5 days, therefore the total yield was the highest, followed by the yield in greenhouse covered with LDPE-IR thermal and it was significantly lower under LDPE normal film.
