EFFECT OF CULTIVAR, EXPLANT TYPE, ETIOLATION PRETREATMENT AND THE AGE OF PLANT MATERIAL ON THE IN VITRO REGENERATION ABILITY OF AVOCADO (PERSEA AMERICANA) |

| Abstract:
Explants taken from avocado trees of the cultivars Fuerte, Hass and Topa-Topa that had been cut back two years ago showed higher proliferation abilities than explants taken from trees that had been cut back in the current year. High proliferation ability was also obtained in explants taken from adult Duke trees. Shoot tip explants produced more proliferation shoots than single node segments. The cultivar Topa-Topa produced the highest number of axillary shoots, followed by Fuerte and Hass. Etiolation treatment did not affect significantly the proliferation capacities of the cultivars Topa-Topa, Fuerte and Hass, but that of adult "Duke". Attempts to root avocado microshoots were not successful due to shoot severe necrosis after transfer to rooting medium. | |
