GROWTH, YIELD AND FRUIT QUALITY OF NUCELLAR FROST VALENCIA ORANGE ON FIFTEEN ROOTSTOCKS IN CYPRUS

Authors:   C. Gregoriou, C.V. Economides
Abstract:
Tree growth, yield and fruit quality of nucellar Frost Valencia orange (C. sinensis (L.) Osbeck) on fifteen rootstocks were evaluated under Cyprus conditions. Over the 9-years production period trees on rough lemon and Volkameriana rootstocks were more productive per unit of tree size than trees on sour orange which is the standard rootstock commercially used in Cyprus. The cumulative yields per tree of both were also significantly higher than those of trees on sour orange and all the other rootstocks used. Rootstocks affected fruit size and weight, rind thickness, juice content, total soluble solids and total acids, but the differences were not large enough to affect the market value of the fruit. On the basis of the results of this trial and because orange is highly susceptible to tristeza rough lemon and Volkameriana which are tolerant to tristeza should be included in further trial plantings as a potential commercial rootstock.
