IMPROVEMENTS FOR THE CONTROL OF PECAN APHID (MONELIA CARYELLA) IN CYPRUS

Author:   Dr. A. Krambias
Abstract:
Optimal Pecan and Walnut production can only be achieved with healthy trees. The traditional walnut tree is known to be highly sensitive to Codling moth (Carpocapsa pomonella) and considerable losses usually occur, if the appropriate control measures are not implemented. When the first Pecan tree orchards have been established in Cyprus, it was thought, that this is going to be highly successful crop for one major reason: The crop was almost free from any serious pest and disease. Unfortunately the situation has changed during the last years. The Pecan Aphid Monellia caryella, appeared as a new serious pest and has been noted, in recent years, to cause considerable losses to the crop. Aphids may reduce the tree vigour and nut quality. Furthermore, the excretion of honey dew by the aphids favours the development of sooty mold with a number of other undesirable side effects.

Despite the intensive spraying programme with a number of organophasphate, carbamate, or pyrethrin insecticides the results are very poor and the farmers are very disappointed. It was therefore, obvious that an urgent and effective control method was needed in order to protect the crop. Quite recently a new novel substance appeared in the market which was described, to be highly effective on aphids. It was therefore suggested to conduct a preliminary study to evaluate the efficacy of this product on Pecan aphid in comparison with an insecticide, that is already extensively used for this purpose.
