COLLECTION OF RHODODENDRONS IN RUSSIA - RHODODENDRONS AS VALUABLE MEDICINAL PLANTS

Author:   M.S. ALEXANDROVA
Abstract:
Recently in Russia growing interest to Rhododendrons was shown both by the specialists and amateurs. 10 species and 2 subspecies are native to Russia and about 100 species of Rhododendron have been introduced to cultivation. The collections of native Rhododendrons grow in the open in some botanical gardens: in Moscow 65 species, Vladivostok 40, Nizniy Novgorod 34, Voronezh 28, Barnaul 27, Ekaterinburg 24, Saint-Petersburg 20, Arkhangelsk and Kirovsk 10 species each.

Russian botanical gardens grow mainly our native Rhododendron species which number 18 species and those native to the Atlantic coast of North America 15 species.

Defoliant plants dominate since they are more adaptive to the moderate or continental climate of Russia.

Among the evergreen rhododendrons the most popular are Rhododendron catawbiense Michx., Rh. maximum L., Rh. brachycarpum D. Don., Rh. smirnowii Trautv.
